Origin and Purpose This web
site first went on-line in October, 2000. The original purpose was to provide a
means of exchanging information with our friends and relatives without the
tedium of writing all those endless individual e-mail messages.
Although
the names have changed over time and some supplement pages have been added, the
basic structure of the site still contains only two major sections, 'Travels'
and 'Friends'.
|
'Travels' Section
The
Travels pages are where we record where we are, what we are doing, and our
personal thoughts and impressions. It was originally going to be like a daily
diary, but it soon became obvious that there were too many days when nothing
happened that was worth writing about. It is still somewhat like a diary but we
have discarded the 'daily' concept.
As travels entries were added it
became apparent that we needed to split this section into individual files
arranged by year so that not so much time would be wasted waiting for old
information to download from the website. These older travels files can be
reached from links located near the top of the most recent travels
page.
|
'Friends Section'
The
friends section starts with an index page which contains links to entries in
the individual 'history' pages.
There is at least one Recent History
page for each person using this site. For the more prolific writers, their
older contributions are moved into 'other history' files identified by the
date-range of entries that they contain. The links to these older files are
located near the top of their parent 'recent history' pages. This file
splitting is done to insure that the size of the recent history file will be
relatively small and will load quickly.
At the left of the Friends index
page is a list of links to information items that have been received. This list
is arranged by the date that each item was received. Clicking on the date will
take you directly to that specific item.
On the right side of the
Friends index page is a list of links to the 'recent history' page for each of
the users of this website. This list is arranged alphabetically by last name
and clicking on a name will take you to the top of the Recent History page for
that person.

What Goes In ? What Stays Out
?
The information items in the individual history files are
copied or created from e-mail or other forms of communication. In general
anything that we receive is a candidate for inclusion in these pages. But...
there are some important exceptions.
1. We must feel that the
information will be of general interest to some or all of our friends or
relatives.
2. Personal information beyond names and places will not be
included except when specifically requested by the contributor. This includes
home addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers and any other items which could
be used for personal identification.
3. We will use our own discretion
to edit out anything we feel might be of a "too personal" nature. When we have
doubts, we will try to contact the contributor to see what they want done with
the information in question.
4. Contributors can include a "do not post"
note in their communications referring to all or any part of the information
they have sent. These items will be removed before posting.
5. We will
often do minor editing to correct keystroke errors, spelling, and punctuation
whenever we notice them. We will also occasionally insert items such as place
names when we feel they will help clarify the communication for other readers.
Such changes will most often be enclosed in bracket "[]"
characters.

Pictures
Your pictures
are welcome on these pages and we will try to include as many as we can.
However, we do have some space limitations and can not include just anything
and everything. So, send as many as you like - we will enjoy them all - but
allow us the freedom to post only the ones that we think will be of general
interest to your friends.
When your pictures are posted they will have
been re-sized to be about 650 pixels wide so that their file sizes will be
small enough to load quickly. We may also do some cropping and color and
contrast changes when we feel those changes will significantly improve the
quality of the pictures.
Please be sure to completely identify
your pictures!! This should include full names of all people in the picture and
their family relationships if any. Also include the date and place where the
picture was taken and who took the picture.
